Louis Majorelle, a prominent figure in the Art Nouveau movement, was renowned for his innovative approach to furniture design. He skilfully integrated natural elements into his creations, infusing them with a sense of dynamic movement and balance. Majorelle's career took an unexpected turn when he inherited his father's faience and furniture business at a young age, leading him to shift his focus from painting to craftsmanship. Embracing the Art Nouveau aesthetic, he collaborated with talented artisans to produce high-quality furniture adorned with intricate marquetry designs using both local and exotic woods. His work gained widespread recognition after being showcased at various exhibitions, solidifying his reputation as a leading ebenist of the era.

Majorelle's influence extended beyond furniture design as he ventured into interior decoration for cafes and restaurants, leaving an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of Paris. However, tragedy struck in 1916 when a fire ravaged much of the workshop's designs and plans. Despite this setback, the workshop underwent significant changes following Alfred Levy's appointment as second director and Majorelle's passing in 1926. Under new leadership, the workshop experienced a shift in style and direction, marking the end of an era for Louis Majorelle’s influential legacy.

Testimonials

★★★★★

Handsome sideboard bought in mid December, and delivered to Germany 10 days later (despite chaos at Dover). The sellers made this a neat straightforward transaction, and wrapped it, for the journey, with TLC.

I recently brought an Art Deco dressing table from the furniture rooms. The piece was exactly as described and Im very pleased with it. They were extremely easy to deal with, prompt with their replies, and the delivery arrived exactly when arranged. Very good service all round

We bought two club chairs from Toby and Katie. The chairs are great and good value, and they were very reliable and organised sellers. However the best thing was that - without being asked - they offered for us to check the condition of the chairs when they were delivered and to take them back if we were not happy. This was incredibly fair. In the end the chairs were exactly as described.
